Clove stems for clove oil A little about the clove oil business Clove oil has become a lucrative business and continues to grow because of its widespread use. In the past, people used it only to cure toothache, prevent nausea, warm the body, now its use is widespread as an alternative anesthetic material. Some countries in Europe even legalize it in modern medicine, such as halitosis treatment or bad breath. This oil is also used in the toothpaste industry, making perfumes, food preservatives, and cosmetics. Because of its widespread use, the need for oil is also high. Generally, this oil is enough to be produced from distilling dried stalks that have been separated from the flowers. In fact, because of the need for large clove oil, the turn of the leaves is targeted to be distilled. In general, there are three types of oil on the market, namely Clove Leaf Oil (CLO) obtained from leaves, Clove Stalks Oil (CSO) obtained from stalks, and Clove Bud Oil (CBO) obtained from flowers. Expensive interest rates make farmers prefer to sell it in dry form. Whereas the quality of the oil (CSO) is quite good. The eugenol content in CSOs is around 78% to 85%. Eugenol is widely used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food flavoring industries. The oil yield is also high, between 3% and 5%. That is, if you distill 100 kg of dry stalks it will produce 3 to 5 kg of clove oil. This refining waste stalk is not immediately disposed of, but can be dried in the sun and sold to the home cigarette industry. Unfortunately, clove stalks are only available at harvest, even though industry demand is timeless. That is why CLO or leaf oil is produced. The content of eugenol in leaf oil ranges from 58% to 75%, and in 100 kg of distilled dried leaves 2 kg of oil will be produced. Oil refining requires large amounts of leaves, especially if you use a kettle capable of loading between 300 kg and 1 ton of leaves. So the dried leaves in one ha of garden are not necessarily enough for the distillation process. It might even need a village garden so that the distillation process is successful and hundreds of villages so that the distillation can take place every day. So, just imagine how many clove trees will be deforested or lack of leaves in the future because they end up in a refining plant.
